Dreamy Orange Chocolate Chip Ricotta Cookies

I really am head over heels in love with these cookies! They are dreamy in so many ways, especially the way they melt in your mouth. They’re basically soft little pillows of bliss, and I promise people will beg you for the recipe.

They have that irresistible flavor blend of fresh orange and dark chocolate—and it’s not just a hint. You KNOW these are orange and chocolate cookies.

The ricotta on the other hand is a much more subtle flavor, so don’t be worried about that if you haven’t ever made Italian ricotta cookies before.

Oh and let’s not forget about that finishing touch—that sweet and simple glaze will have you licking your fingers, and the plate!

The Perfect Christmas Cookie

These cookies will be the talk of the Christmas party, and possibly the most loved cookie at the cookie exchange or on the cookie tray you deliver to neighbors.

With all of the cookie recipes I’ve shared on my blog, there’s no way I could make all of them during the holiday season, but these Orange Chocolate Chip Ricotta cookies ALWAYS make the cut for my Christmas Cookie lineup. They taste like those traditional chocolate oranges that I love but even better!

I made these when I had family staying over Thanksgiving and they were gone in no time. And like I said, no one could have guessed it was ricotta that made them so moist and perfect.

Orange Chocolate Chip Ricotta Cookies

One of my all time favorite Christmas cookies! Perfectly soft and full of that irresistable fresh orange and dark chocolate flavor. Sure to be a hit at your next Christmas party!
Servings: 35 cookies
Prep25 minutes
Cook45 minutes
Ready in: 2 hours 10 minutes

Ingredients

Glaze

  • 1 1/4 cups (154g) powdered sugar
  • 2 1/2 Tbsp fresh orange juice
  • 1 tsp orange zest (about 1/2 navel orange)

Instructions

  • In a medium mixing bowl whisk together flour, baking powder and salt for 20 seconds, set aside.
  • In the bowl of an electric stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment cream together sugar, butter and 1 Tbsp + 1 tsp orange zest until combined (scrape bowl as needed throughout mixing process).
  • Mix in egg then blend in ricotta and vanilla extract. Add in flour mixture and mix until nearly combined then mix in chocolate chips.
  • Cover bowl and chill 1 - 2 hours until it's not quite so sticky and a little easier to work with (if needed you can freeze it for a bit).
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees during last 20 minutes of dough chilling. (Note, don't use dark cookie sheets for this recipe or bottoms will burn).
  • Scoop dough out using a medium cookie scoop or two spoons (so you have just a heaping 1 Tbsp) and drop onto parchment paper or silicone liner lined baking sheet spacing cookies 2-inches apart.
  • Leave remaining dough chilled. Bake cookies in preheated oven 13 - 14 minutes until almost set.
  • Let cool on pan several minutes then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Repeat with remaining dough (placing dough on a cool baking sheet).
  • For the glaze, in a small mixing bowl whisk together powdered sugar, orange juice and orange zest. Spoon over cooled cookies.
  • Let glaze set at room temperature. Store cookies in an airtight container.

Very easy to make! I baked my cookies for the full 14 minutes. These are delicious. Will be making them again. Thanks for the recipe.

Hello! I’m excited to include this as one of my 4 assorted Christmas cookies this year but 2 of my other recipes already have chocolate. Do you think I could replace the chocolate chips with dried cranberries of would that not work? Otherwise, I’m happy to go with my belief of no such thing as too much chocolate!

That would be fine, but you may find you like a blend of chocolate and cranberries with the orange flavor. Happy baking!

Yes they can be frozen, just keep in mind the glaze may become sticky upon thawing. You may prefer to wait to add that until after thawing if possible.

So yummy. I make cookies often for my family, and don’t generally indulge, but I helped myself to many of these due to how wonderful they were.

  • Cheryl

I cannot rate this yet, but I’m definitely adding to my Christmas cookie baking list this year. Can you please tell me what constitutes one serving? Is it just one cookie?

    Thanks!

      • Cheryl

Thank you! If they’re half as good as all of your other recipes (I average making at least one per week over the past several years) I know they’ll be great!

DIVINE! MAKE THESE TODAY!! We are blessed with a local-ish fresh ricotta maker. Sometimes the ricotta is fabulous (especically when it is still warm!) but sometimes it’s not the best. This last batch of ricotta was not the best-dry, thick and far from creamy. I did not want to consume in that state and I didn’t want to throw it out. I searched for a recipe. Landed upon this recipe. I had all the ingredients and went for it. Also worth noting, I am not a fan of orange and chocolate combo but I wasn’t the intended audience. My original plan was to make them for our employees and my hubby. I am pretty sure these delectable cookies are not going to make it to the intended audience. They are that good!! I believe the dry, thick ricotta had a lot to do with how the cookies turned out. Thank you so much, Jaclyn! Excellent recipe. It will make it to my recipe archives.

These cookies are sooooo good. They are soft on the inside with a gentle orange and chocolate taste. Then with the powdered sugar frosting…to die for. They look beautiful and are a lovely new addition to my Christmas plate. Highly recommend!!!
